When I select italics, I find it helpful when Word shows the cursor in italics 
if the text is to be in italics at the point of insertion. It would help if the 
cursor in Writer also did the same for italics and perhaps also had cues for 
bold text.

I am confirming that this does not happen. I don't know if it should, but this
is technically an issue.

I have changed category to feature request and setting Platform & OS to all. And
updating summary.

Writing in superscript or subscript can be visualised as well.

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on
my owner to the owner "requirements".
