Hi Manfred,
I could not reproduce this problem. Please provide more infos about
your linux system (distribution, window manager and desktop, glibc
version, graphic adapter and driver, Xfree version)

here my configuration:
- distribution
  Linux version 2.4.20-xfs (Knoppix)
  (gcc version 2.95.4 20011002 (Debian prerelease))
  #1 SMP Mit Mär 26 15:37:36 CET 2003 Debian -

- window manager and desktop
  kwm, KDE 3.1.1 Version 2.4.20-xfs

- glibc version
  /lib/libc.so.6 -> libc-2.3.1.so

- grafik adapter and driver
  3Dfx Interactive, Inc. Voodoo Banshee (rev 3).
   
- XFree version
  XFree86 Version 4.3.0

Hi,
glibc 2.3.1 is buggy. I would call this one a duplicate of #10210
although the symptoms are different. Maybe the Knoppix team patched
the code on their own, running into another problem.
