Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 15813
View->Inactive menu items pref should just go away
Last modified: 2013-02-07 22:43:33 UTC
This is maybe the most useless preference in the whole of OpenOffice.org: in Options->OpenOffice.org>View there is a checkbox for "inactive menu items". This is completely useless. Why? Because *none* of the Human Interface Guidelines in existance on any platform OO runs on suggests hiding menu items. Just as an example the text from Windows HIG (URL in issue): /- |In general, it is better to disable a menu item rather than remove it because |his provides more stability in the interface. However, if the context is such |that the menu item is no longer or never relevant, remove it. For example, if a |menu displays a set of open files and one of those files is closed or DEL eted, |it is appropriate to remove the corresponding menu item. \- The UI Guidelines of GNOME, KDE and Aqua are much stronger in their wording, not even suggesting that removing menu items should be a valid solution ever. Even though removing this one pref might be a drop in the ocean, I think it should be policy to at least apply "common denominator" UI fixes that improve the user experience *on all 4 plattforms*. Removing unnecessary prefs is an important step to making the necessary ones more usable. /ralph
Not sure if this is a defect as such as the system is working as designed... Therefore changing to enhancement as I *think* thats where it should be - someone feel free to change it to something else :) Confirming so that this issue can move on to the necessary parties.
SBA: Reassigned to Bettina.
