Please tell me which window manager do you use. The window manager
must support the fullscreen mode.
to see if the windowmanager support the fullscreen mode enter
-> xprop -root
there must be the following entry-> _net_wm_state_fullscreen

Window manager was KDE 2.2.1. I cannot reproduce the problem anymore,
it does not occur in the 1.1RC running on KDE 3 (system
reinstall/upgrade).
