n OOo 1.1Beta2, the Thesaurus is blanked out and not accessible
to the user until spell check is run at least once, then it becomes
accessible.

Expect Behavior:
Thesaurus is accessible at start of program

Actual Behavior:
Thesaurus is only accessible after spell check is accessed

Additional information:
This doesn't occur in 1.0.3

I am adding myself to CC on this one because this may be a lingucomponent issue. 
 
Can you please check what Tools->Options->languageSettings->WritingAids shows 
upon first startup.  Is the OOo Thesaurus service checkbox checked?

Kevin,
Sorry I haven't written sooner.

OOo Thesaurus service checkbox is unchecked.  When checked, the 
Thesaurus becomes available without having to use spell check first.  
This option isn't saving for me, I have to recheck it everytime I 
start the program.  I'd prefer to have it default to being on.

(Added Note: once in about ten restarts, the Thesaurus service
was available on startup - random issue?)

I can confirm Max's reports.  The Thesarus doesn't show up
until you do a spellcheck.  Clicking the checkbox Kevin
mentioned doesn't do anything -- its value is not saved
across runs.

I believe this is related to Issue 15362.  
  
Will the bug reporter try the workaround listed in that issue and see if his trouble 
goes away? 
  
If so, this one is already fixed in OOo 1.1 RC and we can close this.

For what it is worth, yes, changing the configuration file
in Issue 15362 seems to solve the problem.

I'm not sure the fix fixed the entire underlying
problem, see issue 16103.

issue 16103 is a different issue that also appeared in a
different way in 1.0.3.
