In the attached file, the captions are not getting the numbers. I can see the 
field code for illustration but I need to see the numbering. I have not had this 
problem before

Hi magrawal,

thanks for using and supporting OpenOffice...
Please have a look on my screenshot. 
If this is what you expected you need to do the following:
1.  click "View"
2.  there is a check before the istem "Fields"
3.  select "Fields" to uncheck this item
4.  The View should be similar to my screenshot...

I hope this helps you...
