Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 14978
Backup Location & file name
Last modified: 2013-02-07 22:32:57 UTC
Suggest moving .BAK files to save in same folder as original file as per Microsoft Office -- multiple files with same name will be overwritten in the backup folder. Also suggest repairing code to save correct file name instead of internet form ie. "My%20Resume.sxw".
TM->BH: Please have a look at this feature, thanks !
put the backup file in near the original file have some benefit: people will be easier to find it, if needed. about name: if only one name, maybe we will have problem if multiple documents open/edit with same time, and also difficult to recognize. %20 is for space " ". I beive the main reason is to make it compatible with url, or Linux ?
I agree that backup files should be placed in the same folder with original ones. 1) When needed, it's more convenient to find backups in the current, working directory, then search for them somewhere in the user profile. 2) As the issue author has already stated, files with the same name are being overwritten, that is not good. 3) SECURITY REASONS. Let's suppose, I'm working with some doc placed on a removable drive. Or on an encrypted drive, like Truecrypt. When I'm working with Microsoft Word, both the original file and the backup copy remain on the encrypted/removable drive. When I'm working with OOo Writer, the backup copy is placed on common drive, thus accessible for everyone. I think, it's quite a big security hole. :(
To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on my owner to the owner "requirements".
