I often use equations which use characters such as alpha, beta and so on. One of 
the features I liked in Word was that when I opened the insert special 
characters dialog and selected a character, I got the option of adding this 
character to the autocorrect menu. This is a very convenient way for users to 
associate their frequently used special characters with keywords of their 
choice. For example, I would like to create autocorrect entries that look like:


alpha -> replace with "greek symbol alpha"


Sigma -> replace with "greek letter sigma (U+2271)"


and so on.




It may be possible for me to go in and create all these entries by hand, but 
having the autocorrect button in the "insert special character" dialog would 
make things so quick.

The Issue you raised is currently 'Unconfirmed' pending review, but has not been
updated within the last 3 years. Please consider re-testing with one of the
latest versions of OOo, as the problem(s) may have already been addressed.
Either use the recent stable version: http://download.openoffice.org/index.html
or consider trying the new OOo 3 BETA (still in testing):

my owner to the owner "requirements".
