Description dankegel 2003-04-30 11:25:00 UTC
in build 644, horizontal spacing was messed up
in import from word format. Sometimes it's fine,
but sometimes letters get all jumbled together.

This is visible in nearly all Word documents
I've imported into this snapshot; I link to one
(guide2.doc) whose headline was particularly munged.

I used Word 97 to cut down guide2.doc and will attach
the result as guide4.doc. It has just three lines of
text: a big headline LINE1, a smaller line under that
with text "line2", and a footnote at the bottom,
with text "footnote". All are horribly mangled --
oo1.1beta only mangled the footnote and put line2
in the wrong place -- but with the new snapshot,
LINE1's letters all run together horizontally.

I hereby confirm my bug :-)

Reassigned to MRU
Comment 4 dankegel 2003-05-11 19:16:52 UTC
didn't know to set target build when I filed this; I know now...
Comment 5 michael.ruess 2003-05-13 12:59:19 UTC
This does not look like a problem of the import. The font is imported
correctly, but it seems that "Times New Roman" is not replaced by a
suitable Font anymore.

MRU->HDU: did something change in Font replacement regarding fonts
like "Times New Roman" on Linux/Unix?

Can you attach a screen (or window) shot?
Is the "View->Online Layout" look better?

Comment 8 dankegel 2003-05-14 08:20:09 UTC
Yes, View->Online Layout helps incredibly -- it's totally
legible then. But wait - if you then export to pdf, it
ignores the Online Layout setting, and becomes illegible again!
I guess that's another (fairly serious) bug. Anyway, the
exported pdfs have pretty much the same problem as the
non-online view.

I wonder what font it's picking instead of Times New Roman...
Comment 9 hdu@apache.org 2003-05-15 11:30:08 UTC
I can imaging what has caused this... but this has been fixed.
Since you say it was build 644 do you happen to know which of
the 14 milestones in 644 it was?
Comment 10 dankegel 2003-05-15 16:24:44 UTC
Sorry for the imprecision. The build I checked was 644m11.
Are there more recent ones I could try?
Comment 11 christof.pintaske 2003-05-21 16:38:42 UTC
looked ok to me in StarOffice 645m2-2.
cp->Dan: can you create a ps file (print to file) that shows your
problem ? That way we can check which fonts you are using.
cp->MRU: can you reproduce the problem inhouse ?
Comment 12 dankegel 2003-05-21 17:28:46 UTC
Works for me in beta2. Go ahead and close it out, thanks!
Next time I have a bug like this I'll be sure to include
an exported .ps file so you can see the fonts.
