Description dankegel 2003-04-27 00:57:45 UTC
The footnote at the bottom of page 1 column 1 of TRANS-JOUR.DOC
is not rendered at all properly. It should be a paragraph of
text, but instead it is a tiny horizontal bar (under Windows)
or an approximately correctly sized box filled with I Ching
characters (under Linux).

This bug was present under OpenOffice 1.0.x, so it is not new.

See

for a pdf showing how it should look.

Minimal test case: a blank page with a footnote saying "This is a footnote".
Comment 3 dankegel 2003-04-28 23:46:02 UTC
I just attached a minimal testcase,
consisting of a page blank except for
a footnote saying "This is a footnote".
The footnote displays fine in Word 97,
but not in any version of OpenOffice.
It also displays mostly correctly in AbiWord.
Note that I cannot reproduce the problem
with a .rtf file, so it may be specific to the
.doc importer.

I hereby confirm my own bug, as directed by the "how to help" page.

Reassigned to MRU
Comment 6 michael.ruess 2003-05-13 13:28:01 UTC
MRU->CMC: The content of the footnote text is not imported correctly.
Formatting this with a different font after import does not correct
this; seems the characters are converted wrongly.
Comment 7 caolanm 2003-05-14 17:22:15 UTC
The good news is that I can remove the silly font stuff.

The bad news is that when I do that I find that the footnote does not
have a symbol before it at the beginning of the footnote, and for some
reason the existing code takes the footnote symbol from there instead
of from the main text where it also appears. i.e. we end up with
"T"his is a footnote, where the "T" is used as a footnote symbol.
annoying, I need a bit of thought to see the easiest and safest way to
rectify this.
Comment 8 caolanm 2003-05-21 13:38:15 UTC
cmc->mru:
Ok, heres what I propose. For rc we fix the silly symbols because
that's certainly very broken. This reveals that the filter expects to
see the footnote character before the text inside the footnote itself,
which is not always the case. This is quite an extensive change to
make before the final version and very error prone, so I'd reccommend
we do that for the 2.0.
Comment 9 caolanm 2003-05-21 14:37:08 UTC
reopen to reassign
Comment 10 caolanm 2003-05-21 14:38:24 UTC
cmc->mru: acceptable in dublinfilterteam07 for 6.1RC ? and make
changing the footnote character system a new seperate 2.0 task ?
Comment 11 michael.ruess 2003-05-22 08:58:29 UTC
MRU: Yes, this is acceptable for me. The "loss of information" has
been eliminated and the problem, that the "T" is taken for the
footnote can be workarounded.
For the extensive change I'll file a new task. ID will be posted here
in this issue, so it can be monitored by the OO user(s).
Comment 12 michael.ruess 2003-05-22 08:59:05 UTC
Fix verified in CWS filterteam07. Will be available in OO 1.1 RC.
Comment 13 michael.ruess 2003-05-22 09:06:36 UTC
The "follow up" issue for the remaining problem is #14737.
Dan Kegel has been added to CC list of it.
Comment 14 michael.ruess 2003-07-17 13:08:52 UTC
Fix applied to OO 1.1 RC.
