Description rogerathome 2003-04-26 13:10:45 UTC
When I use Optimal Column Mode and one of the cells is not in Automatic Line
Break mode the Width sometimes isn't set correctly. Sometimes the Column gets
smaller sometimes bigger and sometimes it works after using this function twice
without any other changes.
If one of the Cells is not in Automatic Line Break I guess it should use this
one as the reference for the widest one.

Hi Niklas,

one for you.

I think the default for optimal column width is the cell with the
maximum width.

Hi Bettina,

Niklas told me that it works as specified. I think we should change
the default behaviour as it is not intuitive. Optimal Column width
should use the widest cell.

What do you think ?

Frank

This issue is considered for OO.o later.

I found same problem in another spreadsheet
Problem still exists in OpenOffice 2.0rc

Problem: getting "Format-Column-Optimal Column width" to work on a selected
column. Problem seems to be more than having all cells in a column in Automatic
line break mode
in "OptimalColumnWidth error example.sxc" problem is column D

Expected sequence of events:
a) select Column D
b) go to Format-Column-Optimal column with and press "OK"
c) Column D increases in width to accommodate longest text in a cell - at least
that's the way every other spreadsheet that I've used tends to work

I get result wanted by doing following
1. go to Format-Cells-Alignment and select Horizontal = Left and Vertical =
Middle and tap "OK"
2. select Column D
3. go to Format-Column-Optimal Column With and tap "OK"
4. get desired result: column D increases in size to acommodate all text

Obviously problem with "Format-Column-Optimal column width" working regardless
of the format of the individual cells in the column.
"Format-Column-Optimal column width" does not work when cells in column have
different formats and/or have some particular formats.

I'll add my problem case if I can figure out how to add it... I was buying parts
for a bicycle ... actually using 2.0rc and ran into this error.
