Description dewibjones 2003-04-24 15:34:47 UTC
Hi,

We would very much like to have a Welsh MySpell in OpenOffice, but we've come
across a stumbling block.

We produced just a tiny simple word list (at
http://www.melin.bangor.ac.uk/cy_GB.zip) to verify the steps described at :

http://whiteboard.openoffice.org/lingucomponent/download_dictionary.html#reinstall

would work for Welsh.

Sadly, in Tools->Options->LanguageSettings->WritingAids, in the drop down
presents me with language/locale 'Unknown' instead of 'Welsh (UK)'

Then back in Writer when highlighting some Welsh text and using
Format->Character->Font to denote it as Welsh in order to enable the correct
spellchecker, then neither 'Unknown' or 'Welsh' are listed in the drop down.

If we changed the file names and dictionary.lst entries to for example fr_FR
then our simple spell checker works within OOo but of course with text marked as
French.

Cheers,
Dewi.

Hi

Adding myself to CC on this but ...
moving this issue to the localization project.

Unfortuantely, determining which locales/languages
are recognized by OOo is not within the
lingucomponent domain and is instead in the
domain of the localization project.

Thanks,

Kevin

doing so now.

Thanks Kevin.

Perhaps a bit of background to this issue and why it's appeared.

We are a part of the University of Bangor, Wales that develops Welsh
language linguistic tools to various organisations in Wales. In the
past we've developed our own Welsh spell checkers and more recently
worked with Micorsoft to integrate our checkers into Office XP
(http://office.microsoft.com/intl/welsh/Downloads/2002/WelshPtk.aspx)

However, there is a big interest in Wales, especially by some
government bodies, in StarOffice/OpenOffice, not only because of
licensing and cost etc, but also because of OOo's potential for better
support of the Welsh language i.e. a Welsh OpenOffice (which is under
development). Towards this and as our contribution we would like to
provide a Welsh MySpell checker.

Hwyl,
Cheers,
Dewi.

Liz->TL: Once the target is certain, the strings to use are
ENGLISH_us
Welsh
GERMAN
Walesisch
Do not include the country after the language because it is only
spoken in one country.

Liz->TL: OOPS! typo in the German string! Please use these strings

In CWS welsh OK: The entry "Welsh" is available and the character
attribute can be saved and reloaded without problems.
This CWS will be included in OO.org 1.1 In a masterbuild where this
CWS is included (probably 645m8 or 645m9), you can do further
experiments based on the welsh entry. Set to verified.

Excellent news!! Thanks for your help!

Sorry if this is a silly question, is there an easy way to get hold of
that masterbuild (645m8 or whatever) containing CWS Welsh so that we
at least have something to play with before the 1.1 is officially
released for our spell checker development work?

It's not a show stopper, but it would be nice to have it also for
demo'ing of what's to come.

Cheers
Llawer o ddiolch!
Dewi.

Unfortunately not yet fixed in OO 1.1 RC, but OK in OO.org 645m13
(Build 8660). Closed.
