I have just installed OO 1.0.3 after using 1.0.1 for a year or so.  When I 
select the non-default printer and attempt to print, the program crashes.

With 1.0.1 this did not occur (actually I vaguely remember something like this 
happening when I first installed it but I can't be sure).

It seems you don't even need to print.  Just select a different 
printer in the print dialog and click ok.
