I've tried using the derivative symbols and the prime symbols and they are way
too high above the letters. 

I realize that the issue may have to do with fonts but this is a BIG issue in my
eyes and shouldn't be allowed to wait until 2.0.  Many of us are technically
inclined and therefore have to write technical papers which involve equations. 
If the equation editor doesn't work the way we want it to then our choice is to
use other software since equations ARE what we do.

Just thought I'd post that this is probably a bigger issue than likely to be
believed.

Should be fixed already.
Though fix may not be applied to OO 1.0.2 and OO 1.0.3

If you don't mind giving developer builds a try you may use the latest
developers build.

TL->MRU: Please check.

This is fixed in OpenOffice 644 and newer (such as OO 1.1 Beta).
