Description Unknown 2003-04-14 11:03:51 UTC
I have a weird problem with the startup of OpenOffice 1.1beta suite. I have done
a setup -net -install (as root) and after that a local install as a normal user.
When I'm trying to start the application, the startup hangs for some unknown
reason. When looking at the top listing, the program is there, seems to contain
five processes/threads, consuming about 12 MB of memory and not using any CPU time.

The interesting part is that if I manually kill the process of highest PID
number, the program starts up normally and works! I have checked that there are
no other instances of the program running, and there is no .lock file present in
the user's OpenOffice.org1.1beta directory.

I am using Debian GNU/Linux 3.0, Gnome 1.4 (the one that comes with Debian) on a
normal i386 system. I have installed Kochi Mincho and Kochi Gothic Japanese
truetype fonts for OpenOffice, but otherwise it's stock version, installed
without Java.

I have had some problems with previous versions (1.01, 1.02) as well, sometimes
they just die on startup, especially when starting with Japanese locales - seems
to be some kind of timing / race condition problem. However, they don't have
this kind of blocking behaviour.

(No problems with other software or general instability, have been using the box
for several months so I suppose the hardware is fine.)

Hi,

Since you are using Debian, you may want to read issue

11777 which discusses an issue specific to Debian that caases a hang (which has been fixed in upcoming 1.1 buids) and includes a workaround that can be done.

Perhaps your issue is related to that issue.

Using STAR_OVERRIDE_DOMAINNAME as suggested in issue 11777 solved the
problem (and apparently it will then be fixed in future releases
without the workaround). Thanks to Kevin Hendricks for the hint!
