Description issues@www 2001-07-22 23:05:14 UTC
Open Office 633 installed on an Intel Windows 98 machine.

It would be helpful if the Setup program for Open Office
were more self-healing.
I crudely ?uninstalled? oo633 by deleting all the files,
and then tried to reinstall it. Setup told me that the
program was already installed in directory
F:\apps\open_office\oo_633
and that was that. Setup would not do any repairs.
It took me an hour to discover that Setup was coming
to this conclusion by reading the file
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\sversion.ini --
and of course coming to the wrong conclusion.
After I edited the ini file, Setup happily re-installed
Open Office.

It would be good if the Readme file or the Setup
dialog itself mentioned where the sversion.ini file was.

Even better would be for Setup to check further
by looking in the directory where it thinks the
program is to see if all the folders are actually
there. Setup has a complete list of what folders
and files should be there, and could easily discover
that something was missing. Further, it has all the
Install files necessary to reconstruct the entire
program, with or without user intervention.
Or, a ?Repair It Anyway? button could be included
on the dialog in which Setup reports that everything
is fine (it thinks).

The Open Office program itself should probably
have some means of discovering missing or
corrupted files and telling the user to run
Setup again to repair the problem.

I have a commercial office suite that sometimes
loses some part of itself, and it helplessly reports
that it can't do some task. My thought is always --
Why don't you first tell me what you can't find,
second ask me to navigate to where the files are
or should be, and third suggest how any missing
files can be restored, or restore them yourself.

Software that works well when everything is in
order is good, but software that can detect when
something is wrong and can go ahead and repair it
is really user-friendly.

Hi Olli,
do you think that we can handle this: repairing an empty Office folder?
This means that the setup has to make a new installtion. We can't restore
the former installation in details (where should setup read what has been
installed) but perhaps we can offer a new installation?
