Description vliscony 2003-03-30 22:53:26 UTC
in editing a large file (abt 50 pages), I encountered several problems
repeatedly.

1) deleting a paragraph mark frequently did not change the color, so you would
not know it was deleted (it was)

2) sometimes deleting a single space, a line appeared all the way to the right
hand edge of the screen.

3) on several occasions the program hung when editing things in the middle of
the file.

also, display of footnotes was unstable at several instances during
this editing process.

another notable difference is, that it seems the file is a lot more
inefficient under 1.1

File Size: to be specific, this file is now 4.1 Gb in .sxw format, and
only 1.4 Gb in .doc format.

It used to be the other way around, so there may be something else
spooky going on.

Sounds about redlining- and format-problems.

i am just uploading more "evidence" in terms of the file
mmr8_chap7M1_v0.75.sxw, and the file on which it was based chap7m1.
doc.

This file became progressively instable during editing in 1.1.

the main symptom was that when changing the paragraphs of quoted
material to a new paragraph format via the style sheet, the file
sometimes hung. in the end it crashed completely, and finally it
displays nothing.

the file was originally generated in word perfect, but exported as a
word file, and then imported into OOo.

this became so bad... in the end I had to delete all the leading
spaces and section breaks in MSWord, and then re-import the file, with
OOo 1.1beta, it just crashed after every few deletions.

It's easy to replicate, just start deleting the paragraph breaks and
leading spaces --- the author obviously uses wp like a mechanical
typewriter... after you do a few of those it starts to become
unstable. In the end all kinds of things happen. At one point I could
no longer read the file, and then I ran a repair, and was once again
able to read the file...

First problem is not a bug; it is an enhancement request. A paragraph
mark is a non-printing character (and not really document's content)
and so it is not affected by the "track changes" functionality.

Second problem is known and will be fixed in OO 1.1 Beta2.

Third problem (hangup or crash of program) will be investigated later
this week by myself.

it could not still work right.
There are a number of related conditions that screw up the display in
editing mode, sometimes it's lines that run through the whole display
for just deleting one character or space, or paragraph mark. In other
cases it is this problem of not showing any physical change when
deleting a paragraph mark, and yet it is deleted. I suspect that there
is a complex of problems here that will all have a related cause, but
since it worked fine in previous versions, I don't see why any of this
would be an enhancement request, it is functionality that was lost in
the beta version.

Problems regarding tracked text running through the screen have already been
fixed for OO 1.1.x versions. Crashes also shouldn't occur anymore by this.
Please try out with 1.1.3 / 1.1.4 or OO 2.0 snapshot builds.
