Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 12629
Installation window freezes, crashes X with S3 savage + X 4.1
Last modified: 2003-09-08 16:53:51 UTC
I've attempted to install OO v1.0.2 and 1.0.1, both appear to have this problem. I'm running Debian v3.0 linux w/2.4.20 kernel on an IBM Thinkpag A22e. I'm running Xfree86 v4.1.0-16 using the Savage server. I'm running the fvwm2 (v2.3) window manager. I copy the OOo_1.0.2_LinuxIntel_install.tar.gz to /tmp/ un untar/gz the file, creating the install folder. I become root with su. I cd into install. I execute ./setup The primary (larger window), then a smaller windows opens within it. In the smaller window there is a button labelled "Next" but the rest of the display is not completed. here is a screen capture: http://noodle.pds.k12.nj.us/oo.jpg At this point X freaks out. I can move the mouse but the windows do not respond or update. The system seems to halt briefly while doing this, then freezes completely. I need to kill X (control - alt - backspace) before I can use the machine again. I had been running this OO 1.0.1 on this same hardware yesterday, but decided to reinstall the latest Debian and Xwindows. Oops. Other X applications (Mozilla, Opera, Gimp) operate as expected.
I suppose that xfree 4.1.0 might cause the problem. We know that this version isn't starte of the art, so I think upgrading to xfree 4.2.0. might solve the problem.
This is a known problem. We have this section in the README.Debian of the Debian packages: X server crash / freeze with S3 cards ---------------------------- If you are running XFree86 < 4.2 and have an S3 Savage chip, you must use this workaround. Export this variable before starting openoffice: SAL_DO_NOT_USE_INVERT50=true export SAL_DO_NOT_USE_INVERT50 If you do not do this, OOo will not work and the Xserver will eventually hang. If you are very unlucky, the machine must be _powered off_ and rebooted to clear the problem! Alternatively, you can install the XFree86 4.2 packages, or update the driver to version 1.1.20 or above from http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 863 ***
Thanx to Chris.
