when i try to use the "search" option to search my fields for matching content, the program crashes...every time.  i have even tried to download the program again and it still crashes when i try to search the fields for matching content.

I don't reproduce what you described.
This behavior is not typical, Writer don't crash if you use searching function.

Try to reset/rename your user profile as explained in the official support
forum.
