Description mearstimr 2014-10-12 05:26:47 UTC
when i click on the desktop icon, instead of giving me all the OO options, it only opens writer. Then it says- searching to restore lost document, then it says restore failed, then it opens a blank word document. I am positive I have installed and uninstalled the full version, but the problem remains the same. Also I cannot seem to download or receive the templates I used to have

Hi,
I’ve been trying to reproduce this issue but I have not succeeded in replicating the error. Not being able to reproduce the issue, I have also tried to investigate cases where the Option Window is not displayed when the user double clicks on the OO desktop icon. I observe some occasion when OO does not present the Option window when the user double clicks on the OO desktop icon. I’m not sure if the cases are by design but I have added the information per adventure they will provide some clue for more investigation or a decision on the status of the issue.

Thanks.

Regards,

Vivien

Test Setup: Windows 7, 64bits, Open Office version: 4.1.2,4.1.0, 3.1.4

Scenario 1: Simulate recovery failure:
1. Uninstall 4.1.2
2. Install 4.1.0
3. Simulate a scenario where the user had so many programs opened in the Taskbar such that OO files are hidden from main task bar pane.
4. Open each of the OO files in the "New_Folder_Third" from the attachment.
5. Simulate a scenario where user types in new text and had to exit the program without saving: Type some text. for example I typed: "hope this step can be useful is helping to reproduce the issue. Hope this attempt works!"
6. Do a Ctrl+Alt+delete, select Start Taskbar Manager-> select any of the listed OO files -> Select “End Task”
7. Delete the folder containing the files: "New Folder_Third". Copy the folder to a USB and remove the USB from the computer before deleting.
10. Double click on OO desktop icon
11. OO displays a recovery dialogue box. Select start recovery.

Observation: Recovery fails.

12. Select next.

Observation: OO opens untitled blank writer document. Each time the icon is selected OO opens the existing untitled document. The option Window is not Opened. However no error message.

13. Close the OO documents.
14. Double click on the icon.
15. OO tries to do a recovery of all the document that could not be recovered. 16. Select Cancel.
Observation: Untitled Writer document is Opened.
17. Close the document without saving.
18. Double click on the OO desktop icon.
19. The OpenOffice Option Window is Opened. Close the Window.
20. Copy the folder C:\Users\_ibirov\Desktop\New Folder_Third back to the desktop.
21. Open the folder and open the OO files
22. Double click on the OO desktop icon.
Observation: The already opened Impress file is displayed. No indication that 2 impress files were open.
23. Close the Impress file and double click again on the OO desktop icon.
Observation: The next file in the opening arrangement is presented. In this case the WelcomeOODrawing.odg document. This happens irrespective of the above steps. This happens all the time.
21. Uninstall 4.1.0
22. Install 4.1.2
Repeat Steps 1 to 23 on OO 4.1.2.

Observation: same behavior as in the observations above were observed on 4.1.2.
What I can conclude after further investigation is that each time a user has an open office file open, if the user clicks on the OO desktop icon, the Window presenting the OO file formats, Templates and Open folder are not opened.
Not sure if this is by design but thinking about the user's expectation, the users most likely expect to see the option Window instead of an already opened file popping up whenever I double click on the desktop icon.
This seem to be a reasonable expectation because gives a wider set of possibilities and option to the use. And if compared to similar programs like the Office tools, even web browsers, these programs initiates a new blank document or new page when the desktop icon is doubled clicked.

Scenario 2: Simulate user installed new OO version prior to the incident that is reported in the bug report.

1. Create a folder called “New Folder” on the desktop.
2. Uninstall previous OO version. Note: I had 4.1.2 on my computer before.
3. Download and install OO 4.1.2 from http://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html. Note: Make a note of the location where the files are unpacked to when you download.
4. Select the option to create desktop icon during installation.
5. Click on the OO desktop icon when installation is completed.

Observation: No error message was observed. The OpenOffice window with the following open office options: Text document, Spreadsheet, presentation, Drawing, database, formula, Templates, Open buttons are displayed. Please see attached Picture 1.

6.Click on each button to ensure that they lead to the next page of information or that they open the selected option
7. In a descending order, click on each OO format that is displayed and Create a document from each format.Save the files in C:\Users\_ibirov\Desktop\New Folder Note: The files that were created are in the New folder attachment.
8. Navigate to the C:\Users\_ibirov\Desktop\New Folder and right click on each file to assure that the OO format is listed in the Open with option.
Observation: No error message was observed. The relevant OO file format is listed in the Open with drop down menu.

Scenario 3: Simulate user mistakenly deleted dll and executable files on OO version 4.1.0

1. Manually delete the executable files and the dll files in the C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenOffice 4\program
2. Restart the OO by double clicking on the OO desktop shortcut icon.
Observation: Open office could not be started. I believe this is expected.
3. Reinstall OO from the previously downloaded folder. Choose the repair option.
4. Restart OO by double clicking on the OO desktop shortcut icon.

Observation: No error message is displayed. The OpenOffice window with the following open office options: Text document, Spreadsheet, presentation, Drawing, database, formula, Templates, Open buttons are displayed. Please see attached Picture 1

Scenario 4: Simulate a scenario where user had an older version of OO: version 3.4.1
1. Uninstall OO 4.1.0 and install an older version: 3.4.1
2. Double click on the OO desktop shortcut icon.

Observation: The OpenOffice window with the following open office options: Text document, Spreadsheet, presentation, Drawing, database, formula, Templates, Open buttons are displayed.

3. Copy the attached file folder called “Welcome” to a location on the computer, I used the desktop.
4. Right click each file in “Welcome” folder and “Open with” the correct file format from the drop down list.
5. Leave the files opened.
6. Install 4.1.2 without Uninstalling OO version 3.4.1
7. When the page pops up that say create desktop icon and uninstall older products, unselect uninstall older products. Select install.
8. Double click on the OO desktop shortcut icon.

Observation: No error message is displayed. The OpenOffice window with the following open office options: Text document, Spreadsheet, presentation, Drawing, database, formula, Templates, Open buttons are displayed.

Scenario 5: Explore possibility that the user had two versions installed on the computer
1. Navigate to C:\Users\_ibirov\Desktop\New Folder. Open the file: Welcome Impress.odp,
2. OO alerts the user that the files are locked by another system and gave options to: a. open as read only or b. ignore own file locking and c. open the document for editing.
3. Select the ignore option.
4. Add new text “I'm wondering about issue 125744, hope this step can be useful is helping to reproduce the issue” the file without saving.
5. Repeat step 1 -4 for all the files in C:\Users\_ibirov\Desktop\New Folder
6. Uninstall 3.1.4
7. A dialogue box is displayed asking that OpenOffice.org 3.4.1 Quickstarter and OpenOffice.org 3.4.1 should be exited during uninstall. Select OK.
8. Do a Ctrl+Alt+delete, select Start Taskbar Manager-> select any of the listed OO files -> Select “End Task”
9. A dialogue box is displayed with the with the option to Save or Discard.
10. Shortly after the program not responding option was displayed. Select “End the program”. Go back to execute uninstall again.
11. Uninstall OO 4.1.2 Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features
12. Then install 4.1.2 again. Select option to create desktop icon for OO. Start OO by double clicking on the desktop icon.
Observation: The user was informed about recovery of files.
13. Select next.

Observation: files that were not saved are recovered with all the content in place.

14. Close the files by right clicking on the OO icon in the Taskbar pane (note: icons indicate that more than one file is opened) and select close all windows.
15. Select save for each of the files when prompted to “Save or Discard”. Double click on OO desktop icon again to restart OO 4.1.2.
Observation: The OO database is the only option that is shown. The page that shows all open office format option was not presented. Select the x button to Close the OO data base page.

Observation: The option to save or Discard is presented. Select save. Double click on OO desktop icon again to restart OO.
Observation: The OpenOffice window with the following open office options: Text document, Spreadsheet, presentation, Drawing, database, formula, Templates, Open buttons are displayed.

Scenario 6: Explore Other options for starting OO icon.
Since the user said he clicked on the desktop icon, my assumption was that he doubled clicked on the OO desktop icon that was created during installation. All the test above were done with a double click on the icon.
But since the user said he clicked, I reasoned that maybe it is necessary to test other options of starting up open office that could be done with a click, so I tested as below:
1. Right click the OO desktop icon. Select Pin to Taskbar.
2. Click on windows icon to go to start menu. Click on the OO icon.
Observation: The OO Window was displayed with all OO file format options and templates including the Open button.
4. Right click the OO desktop icon. Select Pin to Start menu.
5. Click on windows icon to go to start menu. Click on the OO icon.
Observation: The OO Window was displayed with all OO file format options and templates including the Open button.

Observation: The OpenOffice window with the following open office options: Text document, Spreadsheet, presentation, Drawing, database, formula, Templates, Open buttons are displayed.

Scenario 7: Simulate Template download:
1. Double click on OO desktop icon to start OO 4.1.2.
2. Select Template. Select “Get more templates online” and try to download ”Yamb game form”
Observation: New page is displayed with the option to download from sf and it is possible to download.

Other observations during this test:
Each time I uninstall OO, if I try to open a word document, then I get the popup saying "Window Installer" After some time another dialog box saying "Microsoft Office professional Plus 2010. Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Office Professional." It seems Microsoft office is reinstalled. It it after this that the word document opens. This happens even if I have already opened word document.Office And then office is reinstalled. I was wondering about this behavior and why Microsoft office has to be reinstalled.

Tester’s evaluation: A few thoughts on my mind after the above attempt are: There's a possibility that the user thinks that this issue could result in actual loss of the user's document. Though the file recovery test that was performed showed that OO recovers files correctly, I'm wondering if there could be more possibilities to simulate erroneous removal of users' documents that could force a recovery of lost document to fail apart from what I have documented in this test.

If user files are lost in the process of doing what the reporter of this issue did, then apart from inconveniences of not displaying the full options in the OO option window when the desktop icon is doubled clicked, this occurrence might impact on the user's reliance on the quality of the OO software.

However, since this behavior was observed on a older version of the OO software, and there are new versions without any user complaint on the same issue, it might be that the issue cannot be reproduced on the newer OO software.

It will be quite useful if @ mearstimr@gmail.com can provide a step by step information on how to replicate this issue. Providing Windows event log to see if any strange behavior like a crash or any other abnormal behavior was observed before this issue. Windows event log.

8. Navigate to the New folder (In my case, the path was: C:\Users\_ibirov\Desktop\New Folder) and right click on each file to assure that the OO format is listed in the Open with option.
Observation: No error message was observed. The relevant OO file format is listed in the Open with drop down menu.

Scenario 3: Simulate user mistakenly deleted dll and executable files on OO version 4.1.0

1. Manually delete the executable files and the dll files in the C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenOffice 4\program. Note: This may be different on another computer)

Vivien, thank your for the meticulous and extensive analysis.

Let me break it down to summarize.

 1. When there has been a previous failure with a document in the ending of a previous session, the OpenOffice desktop shortcut (and the equivalent all-programs case for OpenOffice) on Windows, the application always opens the failure recovery dialog for the appropriate application (Writer, Calc, Impress, etc.). This is by design. The assumption is that any recovery needs to occur before any other document work is initiated.

 2. Sometimes, the recovery process fails and it keeps coming up over and over, so the user is unable to get to the initial dashboard (what you call options) when opening OpenOffice.
    a. Reinstalling the software is not effective. Users attempt this regularly and it is rarely effective. For one thing, the user profile and any history are preserved from one install to the next.
    b. Resetting the user profile might help. This is an usually benign act and it often causes a stuck recovery condition to be removed. Users are often
referred to https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=74&t=12426 for trying this. It would be useful to see if this works in the great scenarios that Vivien has devised.

The recovery failure is significant enough to be separate from the umbrella of Issue 236869. Issue 126832 and Issue 126670 appear related though.
