Docx file containing text blocks. Using OpenOffice 4.0.1 to open it, and nothing is shown.

When opening a docx file which contains text blocks, all the text blocks will be gone.

Using LibreOffice 4.1 does not have this problem.

If I use LibreOffice 4.1 to open that file, then save to odt, the saved odt file can be opened and viewed by OpenOffice 4.0.1.

When opening the attachment above in Open Office Writer 4.0.1, I am able to replicate the bug.

However, when I execute the following steps, in an attempt to replicate the issue, I am unsuccessful in doing so:

Test 1:
1. Created a MS Word document
2. Created text blocks using the Insert Table grid
3. Entered text using calibri font, font size 14
4. Save the document .docx
5. Launched OO Writer
6. Open the saved .docx document

Document opens successfully and the text blocks are present

Test 2:
1. Created a MS Word document
2. Manually draw the text blocks
3. Entered some text
4. Save the document as .docx
5. Launched OO Writer
6. Open the saved .docx document

Document opens successfully and the text blocks are present

Test 3:
1. Created a MS Word document
2. Create the text blocks using the Excel spreadsheet option
3. Entered text using calibri font, font size 12
4. Save the document as .odt
5. Launched OO Writer
6. Open the saved .odt document

Document opens successfully and the text blocks are present

After executing the above steps, I was still unable to reproduce the bugs.

Tested with OpenOffice Version 4.0.1
Operating System: Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit

"When opening the attachment above in Open Office Writer 4.0.1, I am able to replicate the bug."

Adding steps taken to replicate:

1: Saved the attachment to my machine
2: Launched Open Office Writer 4.0.1
3: Opened the file saved above

The document is blank

word 97-2003 document (fweng's original document saved in this version of word)

I opened fwengs original "a" document. I saved it in Word 97-2003. I then opened in in Writer 4.0.1.
The document is the same content as the original when opened in Word, but slightly offset.
Comment 4 stangsdt 2015-04-23 00:24:47 UTC
I also did the following with the original document:

1. saved fweng322's original document in "word macro-enabled document" with the title: "word macro-enabled document". When this document is opened in Writer 4.0.1, it is blank.

2. saved fweng322's original document in "OpenDocument text" with the title: "OpenDocument text". When this document is opened in Writer 4.0.1, it does show content. Again, like in Word 97-2003, it's not as well formatted as the original .docx, but it is visible.

3. saved fweng322's original document in word AFTER I modified the document, but pulling the table out, and putting it at the top of the document, and moving the "This is Topic" lower on the page. I saved it as "modified a doc". When this document is opened in Writer 4.0.1, it does show content. But only the table at the top (which I copied out of the original bordered table. The "This is Topic" block is not shown. (attachment to be added shortly)

document saved in word after modifying

I saved fweng322's original document in word AFTER modifying the order of the text blocks on the page.
When the document is opened in Writer 4.0.1., part of the document is visible (the table), but the title "This is Topic" is missing.
Comment 6 Göran Bakken 2016-04-09 14:36:25 UTC
I have been able to recreate a document in word that causes this issue in OpenOffice 4.1.2 for OS X.

The critical conditions seems to be .docx that include Text Boxes with content.

OS X: El Capitan 10.11.3.
Open Office: 4.1.2 for OS X (AOO412m3(Build:9782) - Rev. 1709696
                2015-10-21 09:36:46 (Wed, 21 Oct 2015)
Microsoft Word: for Mac 2011 14.16.0

Steps to reproduce:
1. Create a new Word document
2. Create a new Text Box (from Home ribbon)
3. Add text to the Text Box
4. Save the file as a "Word Document (.docx)"
5. Open file in OO Writer

Result: Document is blank.
Expected result: Should contain a Text Box with some text.

Additional Info:
Inserting a table in a Text Box causes the same problem (nothing is visible when opened in OO)

This file has only a Text Box with some text in it. It is saved as a .docx file.

More serious failure! File crashes OO. Causes black screen. Unrecoverable.

I created a file according to my previous comment no 6 using the same computer and program versions.

Steps-to-reproduce:
1. Open attached file from comment 7 "Sample .docx file from Office for Mac 2011"
2. Press the green dot in top left corner to "Maximise window" VERY IMPORTANT!
3. Close document by File/Close

Result: Unrecoverable BLACK SCREEN. You need to force quit the program.

Additional information: I have recently installed the program "Better Snap Tool v1.6.1". I have closed this program for this test but it is possible that this program still could intefer since it is a window management tool.

I am unable to replicate this issue:
Test 1:
1. I created a MS Word document in Word 97-2003
2. Inserted a table containing text in Calibri, (font size 48 for the heading and 14 for body)and saved the document in '.docx'.
5. Launched OO Writer 4.0.1
6. Open the saved .docx document and was successfully displaying the document with text block.

I am able to replicate this issue

Configuration information
Mac OS X El Capitan version 10.11.4
I have a Thunderbolt display attached to a MacBook Pro
Also used MS Office 2016 to create sample file
Used OOo Writer 4.1.2 A00412m3(Build: 9782)

When using fweng322's file and opening in OOo 4.1.2, document is blank

Recreated the document using MS Office 2016 to create my own sample file.
Used a text box with Calibri 48 for heading
Created a second text box for the body
Inserted an 8x5 table inside the second text box
Filled each cell with 123
Saved my file as Fiedler_SampleA.dox
Opened with OpenOffice 4.1.2 and document was blank

Using a MacBook Pro with a Thunderbolt display attached to extend the desktop (not mirror)

I did not replicate the black screen - unrecoverable when using the green dot to maximize the window. Was also able to use the green dot to return to my normal-sized window without crashing

Comment 16 Marilyn 2016-04-14 19:52:27 UTC
I performed the following tests for this issue:
1) I used Microsoft Office 2010 (Windows 7) to recreate fweng’s file, saved it as a .docx, and opened it in OO 4.0.1 and 4.1.2 and was able to successfully see the text blocks in the file.
2) I also used Microsoft Office 2016 (windows 10) used the same .docx file that I used above and opened it in 4.0.1 and 4.1.2 and was also able to successfully see the text blocks in the file.
3) But when I saved fweng’s file in my windows 7 and windows 10 machine and opened his file in OO 4.0.1 and saw that his file was blank.

Updated information:

After testing this more I have noticed the following:
- This issue is not unrecoverable.
- I get a black screen whenever I close a document that is maximised if that is the only OO document I have open.
- The Menubars are present, but I need to set my pointer at top of screen to make it visible. From that menu I can create a new doc and everything is fine.

Summary: This is a more general bug. Closing the last document when in maximised window causes a black screen which looks like a crash.

Still testing on same system:
OS X: El Capitan 10.11.3.
Open Office: 4.1.2 for OS X (AOO412m3(Build:9782) - Rev. 1709696
