Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 124945
Need to accept doubledash --options for future compat. with Libre Office
Last modified: 2014-05-21 19:53:51 UTC
This is a request to make Open Office accept both the legacy single-dash command line options and equivalent double-dash options. For example, accept either -calc or --calc. Recent Libre Office releases accept both styles, and LO relase 4.3 will emit deprecation warnings when single-dash options are used. This will likely force scripts which invoke LO to change to using the double-dash form (if they don't already), rendering them incompatible with OO. For example, unoconv.
I see of course no high prio for this. Whatever LO is doing is mostly independent of what we are doing. The other way around it is not so easy because LO consumes most of our fixes and features asap and don't contribute back upstream. Don't expect too much provision for what LO is doing as long as they don't collaborate in the sense of open source development which means contribute bugfixes back upstream.
This request is to not cause trouble for agnostic third parties who want to write scripts which will work with OO as well as LO. Since LO is the mainstream now (like or not), scripts will conform to LO if they must make a choice. -Jim (Who personally has switched from LO to OO because of better stability)
(In reply to Jim Avera from comment #2) > Since LO is the mainstream now (like or not) This kind of comments are off-topic on a bugzilla report, where things should be discussed on technical grounds. Nevertheless, "mainstream"... https://blogs.apache.org/foundation/entry/the_apache_software_foundation_announces56 http://www.openoffice.org/stats/downloads.html Strangely I cannot find LO download stats anywhere. And talking about "upstream", http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upstream_%28software_development%29 the direction clearly flows from OpenOffice down to LO Back to the technical side of things, compatibility is here an invalid argument; for example, go-oo for years the --convert switch, inherited to LO, which isn't present in OpenOffice, making them already incompatible before the double-dash change.
