Description John Collins 2014-04-24 12:31:35 UTC
Have previously used Open Office with WIN.7 OS without problems, now using WIN. 8.1 OS. Orientation of address on #10 envelope is 90 degrees to normal and unable to change. Printer width is too small to feed envelope horizontally.

AOO 4.0.1 document using #10 Envelope as the page, see PDF by same name

See "Envelope1.odt" and "Envelope1.pdf" to compare. The page orientation is correct but the text defaults to the wrong direction. The PDF was produced using "Print to file" on Linux.

AOO 4.0.1 source document

Changed orientation to Landscape, indented recipient and set margins to see if that helped. See "Envelope2.pdf" for the result.

Output of "Envelope2.odt"

Changed orientation to Landscape, indented recipient and set margins to see if that helped. This is the result. Don't know if it matters but the printer is an HP 1200.

This would work IF I fixd the margins

An AOO 4.0.1 document which more or less works. The issue is that, under Format->Page, you have to change the text direction to "Right-to-left Vertical" (although it's actually Left-to-right vertical).

The result of "Envelope Worked.odt"

Suggestions for hopefully fixing this easily

Make these settings behind the scenes (Text orientation and margins, I don't think anyone uses an envelope with .79 inch margins).

Another option: Create an envelope style (make it a section to keep from destroying any existing document should there be one) with all the right settings, load it when envelope is selected.

As a "Quick and dirty" update Help explaining what needs to be done.

Hopefully the "attach originating document" and "need more information" requests have been satisfied. Maybe even a relatively easy solution offered.

I do not understand your problem. The document Envelope2.odt should work. Insert the envelope as the printer guide describes it, with the short edge first and the side to be printed top. The content should be turned automatically. Have you tried it? I don't know any case, where it is necessary to turn the scripting.

(It is the same as with normal documents. When your document has DinA4 landscape, you do not need an A3 printer, but the content is turned automatically to be printed on the portrait A4 paper.)

If it does not work, please fill the whole document (still #10 in landscape) without any margins with dummy text and print it, with the paper feed as the printer guide describes. Then make a picture of the result and attach it. In same rare cases the alignment of the envelope in the paper tray is wrong detected and it is needed to increase the height of the document and set a dummy margin.

Do not forget to have a careful look at the preview in the printer dialog. If the preview does not show the correct width and height, you have to set the paper size and orientation in the printer properties. Find the button on the "General" tab of the dialog.

The envelope filed with text

In response to the comment "Envelope2.odt should work", it printed just as Envelope2.pdf shows - horizontally, the content is not turned automatically. Also in response to the request for a filled document, see EnvelopeFilled.pdf. This started as a blank document where I used Format->Page to select the #10 envelope and at the same time changed the orientation to landscape. Again, the document printed horizontally.

A working AOO 4.0.1 envelope (odt)

This envelope worked nicely even though I got a "Margins out of print range" warning when I set them to 1/10 inch.

A PDF of the working envelope

This PDF shows the envelope rotated 90 degrees which is the orientation of the physical envelope as it passes through the printer using the document feeder. The printed result is an envelope which, although it may not have text positioned perfectly, is certainly within an acceptable range. As the PDF shows, the recipient "address block" could have been 3-4 lines lower but the horizontal positioning is very close.

How to print an envelope

I'm quite sure, that it is an user error. See the attached presentation with pictures how it works for Epson and HP printers.
Comment 16 leroy.tennison 2014-11-19 21:53:24 UTC
I must disagree, this is not user error. I reviewed your attached document and followed the directions. The preview looked correct and the printer properties matched the settings (#10 envelope, landscape). However, the output had the recipient address in about the right vertical position ***if the envelope had been placed in the printer horizontally*** but the print was not vertical as it needed to be and no return information was printed (it probably printed but was off the paper).

This has been a problem since at least OO 3.x, there are actually several related reports, others are confirmed (such as 43153) and they have been reported by more than one user. A common element is the #10 envelope, apparently some other envelopes work.
Comment 17 Regina Henschel 2014-11-19 23:42:58 UTC
@leroy.tennison@verizon.net: Please make sure you have got the newest printer driver, and insert the envelope _exactly_ that way into the printer as the printer guide describes. "the envelope had been placed in the printer horizontally" is wrong for HP 1200.
