Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 123735
Attributes for tall characters are cut-off
Last modified: 2013-11-23 17:30:35 UTC
1- On a Writer document, insert a Math object with Insert → Object → Formula 2- Type: hat %theta 3- Press ESC to go back to the document. Result: the "hat" attribute over the theta character is not visible. In fact, when you zoom in you realize that the top of the theta character is cut. Workaround: edit the Math object and under Format → Spacing → Borders set a top border of 2 mm. This workaround have a problem, though: the Math object lost its baseline and aligns very badly with the surrounding text. The only way to fix the alignment is to completely disable the "Math baseline alignment" under Tools → Options → OpenOffice Writer → Formatting aids and manually move the Math object with Alt+Arrows.

I can see the problem on 4.0.1 and on same build you use.
You are correct - hat theta only is a problem.
