Description sebb 2013-07-27 20:26:29 UTC
The download page http://www.openoffice.org/download/other.html provides links for downloading Language packs and the SDK.

However it does not explain what the SDK is needed for.

Also, the description of the Language packs does not make it clear whether they are included in the full installation pack or not. I assume the language pack for (say) Slovenian is already included in the full install set for Slovenian, but that is not entirely clear. I assume the packs are for additional languages which can be added to an existing full installation pack, e.g. one could download the Spanish installation and then add Asturian and Galician by downloading the language packs. This could be clarified.

Also, rather than explain what the different downloads are at the end of the page, why not have a short paragraph at the start of each section which explains what the downloads are?

@sebb: Thanks for your suggestions. I've updated the text as you proposed.

I've to see how to move it higher. At least the SDK has no separate section as it is within the table.

BTW:
Please note that the current "other.html" webpage is deprecated and will be replaced soon with a webpage (currently accessible via "http://ooo-site.staging.apache.org/download/test/other_tables.html").

What have I done:

- Moved the text for "full install vs. langpack" directly above the table.
- Added also a little text for the source tarballs.
- Added links to the notes for "What is a SDK?" and "What are source tarballs?".

I think this should be enough for the average user. What do you think?

The proposed new version of other is how I imagined it would be.

This better as far as the intro is concerned

However I think combining the language packs in the same table makes the table much harder to read. For most people, language packs are not necessary, so why force them to skip past them in the table?

I think it would be clearer if the page listed the additional language packs separately.

I think it would be clearer to have something like:

---------------- [ cut here ] ---------------

Apache OpenOffice 4.0.0 - Base installation

Please choose one of the following downloads according to your primary language and the platform on which it will be installed.

If you want to use multiple languages, you can download additional language packs - see below for details.

TABLE OF FULL INSTALLs
...

Apache OpenOffice 4.0.0 - Additional Language packs

The base installation includes a single language (e.g. Spanish).
If you want to use multiple languages (e.g. you also want Galician), you can download the appropriate language pack and add it to the existing installation.

The language can be changed via the menu "Tools - Options - Language Settings - Languages - User Interface".

Note that language packs are only suitable for a specific version of OpenOffice (same version and platform) so make sure you choose the correct platform (and version).

You can add as many additional language packs as you want to the base installation.

Regarding the actual issue "Download page should explain what Language packs and SDK are":

This is fixed and the text is shown directly above the table.

For the other suggestion to keep the table separated between full install and langpack:

As discussed on the dev@ mailing list, the webpage is going Live as it is for now. We will wait for a reasonable amount of user complaints. Then we can think about to split the table again.

Because the original problem is fixed, I'm closing this issue.
