Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 122107
password saved with 17 characters does not open, even if I enter in only 16.
Last modified: 2013-04-23 22:54:46 UTC
For the first time I tried to save a document with a password today. I used a 17 character password under "save as". It asked me to verify my password which I did. I noticed that the asterisks stopped at 16 but typed in a 17th character anyway. The password verified and it saved the document (as a .doc like I specified). I tried to open the document with the 17 digit password and it said it was incorrect. I tried opening the password with just the first 16 characters of the password and it still would not open. I tried multiple times. FWIW the password contained punctuation characters.
I've lost access to an important document and as such I am treating this bug as critical.
I'm not able to reproduce this behavior. Can you check your OpenOffice version and verify what version you are running? In 3.4.1 you should be able to enter a password of 64 characters long. The entry field is sized to allow you that many characters and it will show you that many asterisks. So if you are only seeing 16, then something truly odd is happening.
3.4.1 A00341m1(Build:9593) Rev. 1372282
FYI on my version I get 16 asterisks before it no longer echoes characters.
One other thing- I installed from the website on January 31, 2013.
Ok I have another angle then as I cannot access this document and it's a serious problem. How strong is the encryption? It it feasible to try to brute force *whatever* the password may be?
Is there no solution for this? Does this explain the silence? I'm locked out of a document due to a bug and nobody is replying with even a suggestion.

Ariel, That worked. Guess I learned my lesson, not to use this 'feature' Thank You.
(In reply to comment #9) > Guess I learned my lesson, not to use this 'feature' It seems the bug here is missing documentation about it. In fact, this dialog has no Online Help. This should be a separated bug. Closing this one.
