Words in dictionary as Initialcaps flag as wrong in CAPS
Last modified: 2013-02-24 20:34:08 UTC
If "Check capitalization" is on, typing words like Andrew or James (which are correct if typed like that) are wrong if you type ANDREW or JAMES or ANNE. It does this in both GB and USA english.
Hi, There is no "initial caps" flag under MySpell. What you describe above is actually correct operation given the rules of MySpell. Under MySpell, captialization is always checked and the following rules are used: 1. if a word exists in the dictionary wordlist as all lower case such as "andrew" then all of the following are deemed correct. andrew (in the dictionary) Andrew (any word can start a sentence or be a title word) ANDREW (any word can be in a banner or title) Applying this rule greatly shrinks the working size of the dictionary. 2. However, if the word is only capitalized in the dictionary it must match *exactly* to be considered correct. So if only "Andrew" is in the dictionary and not "andrew" then, andrew (marked incorrect) Andrew (marked correct) ANDREW (marked incorrect). So you would have to add "ANDREW" to the dictionary's wordlist. So this is an issue for the dictionary makers and not lingucomponent. The dictionary makers have to decide if all of the proper nouns that are initial capitalized but do not exist as all lowercase variants also need to be added for the BANNER (ALLCAPS) versions. I would guess most would not opt to add those extra entries due to size constraints. The solution is to convince the dictioanry designer of their importance or simpy add them to your own personal wordlist in ALL CAPS. Kevin I am resolving this as "WONTFIX" since it is actually a dictionary maker issue. Please check with them to see if they feel adding proper nouns that exist in only all initial caps are worth duplicating for banner use. Kevin
