Description sajer 2003-03-03 08:29:20 UTC
Is it really not possible to search for paragraph marks (line break inserted
normally with RETURN), tabs etc. in Writer?

From OOoForum.org:
I routinely have to search and replace hard carriage returns with a space or
tab to prepare files to be loaded into a database. My problem is that I cannot
get OOWriter to search for the hard carriage return. I've tried all the
combinations of special characters that I can think of, to no avail.
In MSWord the thing to put in the search field was ^p for a hard carriage
return, ^t for tab. Would there be a way to do the equivalent in OOWriter?

Ah, it is possible in 643, the help file was not updated. But that
illustrates the problem, that to use this you have to search for
regular expressions, look them up in the helpo file and then you know
that $ is the right answer.

In MS Word you just push a button on the search dialog,
select "paragraph mark" from a list and then you are ready to search.

I am positive that a lot of people will never learn how search for
paragraphs in Writer, "regular expressions" must sound awfully
technical to normal users.

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on
my owner to the owner "requirements".

I tried to use $ in order to replace paragraph marks (just like user 'sajer') with spaces or whatelse. But it works bad. I attach an example: I asked to replace $ with @ (replace all): the result is bizzarre...isn't it?
