Description cicad 2010-10-21 20:29:56 UTC
I do fire investigations. In this process, I make reports that have 2 photos
per page. These photos are copied to an existing table of 2 columns by 1 row. I
compose the report in MSWord and then load them into OpenOffice.

I then use OpenOffice to export them to pdf to minimize the report size.
The problem is, if I have more than about 55 photos, the last ones don't load.
Usually this is not a problem. However, sometimes I have up to 120 photos.
I have tried many things to load additional photos into the report, but nothing
works.
Is there some way to do this?
Sincerrely,
John Murvine

I was unable to replicate the bug. Using a fresh version of Rev. 1372282, I created a .docx file in Microsoft Office version 14.0.6123.5001 (32-bit) using the previously attached sample report page and copying the page enough times to get 56 images in the file. I then saved it and opened it in the word processor and all pictures were present. I then copied enough pictures into the document (using Microsoft Word) to have 100 images in the file. I then opened it in the word processor, and still no issues with any of the images.

I was attempting to reproduce this with release version 3.4.1. I made a table with 2 columns and 100 rows (for 200 pictures). As I began filling them it became slower and slower. I went to watch a movie, and when I came back it had errored out on a number of the pictures with 'Picture could not be loaded' I believe this is the problem the report is about. The pictures at the top loaded fine, but at a certain point (about picture 120) they stopped loading. They were loaded fine before I left, so at some point they errored out. I couldn't get them to show up again, so I saved the document, and loaded it again, and they all load fine now. This would seem to indicate it is an out of memory issue.

I then tried to save it as a .doc from openoffice, and it crashed. The ODT file is 100MB with all of the pictures (.5-1.5MB each). I opened up task manager, while trying to save again, and the soffice process is using 1.2GB RAM just before it crashes (but the process doesnt go away when the application closes).

I believe Andrew Norris couldn't replicate this because of the size of the images used in his test case, and perhaps the amount of RAM in his system (I have 4gb).

Because of the way openoffice appears to handle media imbeds, everything is loaded at once, regardless of whether or not it is being shown at the time, so this explodes in memory after enough pictures are put in. If you don't have enough space for the pictures to be loaded, they error out.

A suggestion for how to fix this would be to take the pictures out of RAM unless the user is looking at the page they are on. That however might not be an easy thing to do, and could affect usability for users not currently effected by this issue.

I tried replicating this bug using OpenOffice.org 3.3.0 OOO33m20 (Build: 9567) and using MS Word Version 14.0.7015.000 (32 bit). My machine is running Win 7 and has 4GB memory. I then tried using OpenOffice 4.04 (same version of MS Word).

I varied the number of photos with each attempt (e.g. I started with 56 photos, then tried with 124 photos, and then increased to 258 photos). My largest file was 2.32MB. Each time, all of my photos successfully displayed in the PDF.

I also monitored the memory usage ( MS Task Manager) and did not observe the memory issues noted in the bug.

The steps I took were as follows:

I copied the photos from the sample that John included in his bug report. I saved them to my hard drive. I then created a table in MS Word that contained 2 columns and 1 row for each pair of pictures. I then inserted the photos into the table cells (1 photo per column, 2 photos per row).

My first table (and file) consisted of 56 photos (and thus 28 rows in my table). I saved the file in MS Word. I then opened it in Writer. I selected File… Export to PDF (using the default values in the dialogue box) and saved this new file to my desktop. I then opened the PDF file from my desk top with no issues.

For my second attempt, I copied the 28 row table and pasted it into the same MS Word doc. I now had a 56 row table with 112 photos. I followed the same steps as I did for my first attempt (save in MS Word, open in Writer, Export as PDF). Same success.

For my third and final attempt, I copied the 56 row table and pasted into the same file (so now I had 112 rows and 224 photos). As with the other two attempts, I was able to successfully open the final PDF with all the photos displaying.

While I could not replicate the bug, it would be interesting (and helpful) to find out what versions of software John was using at the time, and what the configurations were (are) on his computer.
