Description rsmith12573 2010-08-06 07:09:39 UTC
When - installing the upgrade from Open Office Org 3.2 to Open Office Org 3.2.1

Where - on a PC with multiple admin profiles set up on Windows 7 Home Premium
(64bit)

What - icons on the desktops or start menus in profiles NOT used for the
installation will NOT change to the new Open Office Org version 3.2.1 icons.
This causes confusion among these users until they left click on the old Open
Office Org version 3.2 icons and the new Open Office Org version 3.2.1
applications run.

Why - Unknown

How - see re-creation that follows.

----------------------------------------------
Follow these steps to recreate the issue

1. Find or create a Windows 7 Home Premium (64bit) computer with Open Office Org
version 3.2 installed on a system with 2 or more admin level profiles. Each
profile must have it's own password and user name.

2. Download and install the upgrade for Open Office 3.2.1 for Windows on "One"
of the admin level profiles. We will call this "profile A". Make sure you
install it for "all users" on this computer when asked.

3. Log-off of profile A and log-on to aother admin level user profile, "profile B".

4. Find any icon for Open Office org in profile B's start menu or on the
desktop. It should still be the old icon from Open Office org 3.2.

5. Left click on the old icon to open the program and the new Open Office 3.2.1
will start.

*Attempted Resolutions*

+First Attempt - Change icons manually+
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

1. Right click on the desktop/start menu icon for Open Office org 3.2 or one of
it's apps (Writer,Calc,Draw,etc.).

2. Select "Properties"

3. In the properties dialog box that appears, make sure the user is on the
"Shortcut" tab (second from the right at the top), and left click the middle
button at the bottom of the dialog box labeled "Change Icon..."

4. Leave the field that says "Look for icons in this file" alone.

5. Left click to select the new Open Office Org 3.2.1 icon.

****************************************************************************
*NOTE: The icon in the upper left corner of the list will not work for this*
*step when changing the icon for the main Open Office Org application. For *
*this, the user must select a similar icon further down in the list. *
****************************************************************************

6. Left click The button on the bottom left of the "Change Icon..." dialog box
labeled "OK"

7. The "Change Icon..." dialogue box will close

8. Left click on the third button on the bottom of the properties dialog box
labeled "Apply".

9. An "Access Denied" notification box may pop up. It will read as follows "You
will need to provide administrator permission to change these settings. Click
Continue to complete this operation."

10. Left click on the button on the bottom left of the notification box labeled
"Continue". It will have the windows 7 administrator shield on it for easy
identification. The notification box should disappear.

11. Left click on the button on the bottom left of the properties dialogue box
that is labeled "OK".

12. The properties dialogue box should close.

13. Repeat the same steps (twice? see note.)for each icon.

*******************************************************************************
*NOTE: This did not work on the first try for each icon. I tried it a second *
*time on each icon before the new icon finally showed up. *
*******************************************************************************

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
+Second Attempt - Restart Computer+
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

***********************************************************************
*NOTE: This was tried before I realized I needed to complete the first*
*resolution twice on each icon for it to change to the new icon. *
***********************************************************************

1. Left click on the windows globe (start button)

2. On the bottom right of the start menu left click on shut down.

3. Wait for you computer to completely power off.

4 Press the power button on your PC and wait for Windows 7 Home Premium (64bit)
to show the log in (welcome)screen.

5. Log back in to profile B.

RESULT: the old version 3.2 icons did not change to the new version 3.2.1 icons.

See bug 121840. Different effect but possibly same root cause.

@Edwin:
Can it be that your confirmation for "Bug 112256 - icon for .doc files show ODF logo" has a relation to this report (because on your PC you have several users with different AOO / OOo installations)?
