Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 111483
Opening multiple documents with different type from WIN file explorer context menu changes document names "Untitled"
Last modified: 2014-03-19 13:28:55 UTC
How to reproduce: On Windows 7 select a WordProcessor file (.odt) and a Spreadsheet file (.ods) in the file explorer. Press Enter to open the files. The files are not openend, but two new Untitled files are created. NOTE 1: a symptom of this is that context menu shows "New" not "Open" NOTE 2: It DOES work when selecting e.g. two WordProcessor (.odt) files.
NOT reproducible with "Ooo 3.1.1 WIN XP DE[OOO310m19 (Build 9420)]"
To clarify, what I mean by "new Untitled are created": Two files are openend and they actually have the SAME CONTENT as the two original items. However, you will notice that the files have "Untitled X" as a name and when saving, you will be prompted where to save. NOTE: I can confirm that it does NOT happen on Windows XP and Ooo 3.1.1 DE[OOO310m19 (Build 9420)], which I installed for that very purpose. It also does not happend on Windows XP with OOO 3.2.0 OOO320m12 (Build:9483). However it does happen with Windows 7 and OOO 3.2.0 OOO320m12 (Build:9483), both on Local Drives and Network Mapped Drives. regards
Created attachment 72820 [details] 1 file OK, obviously
Created attachment 72821 [details] 2 of same type, OK
Created attachment 72822 [details] mixed, breaks
Created attachment 72823 [details] version info (on windows 7 prof 64-bit, 2xAMD Opt 880)
Revived this, since it really is annoying. Created screenshot attachments to clarify the problem. regards
Oh, and the problem is present on UNC paths, mapped network drive AND local drives.
Existing files open with correct content as Untitled 1 and Untitled 2 instead with their given file names. AOO410m14(Build:9760) - Rev. 1572807 Rev.1572807 Win 7
I see the effect. But what indications do we have that it's not a WIN problem?
research in progress
I see some similar effects with other software when I try to open 2 different filetypes supported by the same software: (a) Similar problems as with AOO (a1) 2 documents spreadsheet.pmd and text.tmd (Softmaker Freeoffice): Changes from "Open" (with FreeOffice) to "open with SymWrite (b) no problems (b1) image1.png and image2.jpg will both open with IrfanView (b2) .svg and .html will both open in Seamonkey (c) can't be compared, completely different handling (c1) 7z Zipper will open 2 separate windows showing contents of files file1.zip and file2.7z, but I am not sure whether that can be compared (c2) VLC-player with .ogg and .mp3: it seems VLC-Player only can open 1 instance (d) No problem on UBUNTU Linux with LibO 3.5.7 To be continued
Some further research shows that the problem seems to be related to the fact that the different file types are associated with different applications: * document.odt with swriter.exe * document.ods with scalc.exe (e) After I have had associated these 2 file types with soffice.exe (manually in WIN System Settings) the problem does no longer exist, I can open both documents from WIN7 explorer simultaneously without the reported effect. (f) reported problem reappeared after I changed back association. (g) I wonder why the reported problem does not exist in OS file open dialog I am not sure whether this one should be seen as Enhancement request or DEFECT, tending to ENHANCEMENT. Might be a necessary compromise to get different icons to the file types or whatever. But may be it is possible to associate different documents all to soffice.exe (more tests whether that can cause problems will be required), but to show different icons in explorer, nevertheless?

Hi, I can confirm that the workaround with soffice.exe does the job on Windows in any combination I have tried so far. The issue with the icon file types is not ideal, but for now it's good enough for me. Much appreciated.
