Description akio 2003-02-02 21:02:23 UTC
Punctuation marks such as the colon (:) or the semicolon (;) should not be
printed in italics. This issue especially applies to the definition symbol (:=).

After talking with some others it seems to be a good idea to
introduce a user selectable punctuation.
Currently the same font as for variables is used but the user may
find it convenient to use a different one especially maybe the same
as for text.
Since this requires an UI change the target will be OO 2.0.

Yes, we can implement a solution together with the rework of the
font-dialog.

Adding to the list of affected punctuations/symbols -
* exclamation mark, usage example, factorial
* comma, usage example, coordinates

Right now, as a workaround, for something as simple as
(x, 3!)
I have to write
(x"," 3"!")

That's really ugly!

I'm not sure introducing "a user selectable punctuation font" is a good idea. I think OO Math internal has to be redone/reprogrammed to understand what "variables" are. Actually, in OO Math, we can open menu Format > Fonts...

A dialog will pop up showing that *only* variables are in italics. But punctuations and non-letter symbols SHOULD be be considered as variables.

PS: Wow, it's incredible to see that this bug has been filed on 2003 but never corrected.

Typo error:
... But punctuations and non-letter symbols SHOULD *NOT* be considered as variables.

Showing slash as wrongly in italics

Image showing slash (division) wrongly shown as italics.
But the quoting trick put in addition space which is not desirable.

Just found another symbol which is wrongly in italics: slash (division)

Try this to see (or see the attached image (attachment 84782 [details]):
A / 4 newline
A"/"4 newline

However, the quoting trick workaround does not work well because that puts in additional spaces before and after the slash. Visually, that's not really great.
