Description luctur 2001-06-25 15:46:03 UTC
On my PC (Windows 98 SE, Athlon Tbird 800 Mhz, 128 Mb Ram, videocard Creative
GE Force MX 32 mb) each OO applications freeze after the OO splash screen is
dislayed. Also removing all other application running in background, the error
occurs again. On the system are present either StarOffice 5.2 and OO 627 and
they work fine. The bug is still present also uninstalling StarOffice and OO
627 from the system before installing OO 632.

I'm also encountring this problem for some OO applications, the others just
crash straight away as detailed in Issue 1053. Currently nothing works.

I'm also running Windows 98, using a Celeron 400Mhz, with >128MB of RAM.

I had 627 installed, uninstalled it using the "leave configuration files"
options and then installed 632. NOTE: I didn't install to the default directory
but used the same directory that 627 had used (c:\OpenOffice60). I was going to
uninstall 632 totally and then reinstall it to see if that cleared the problem,
but after reading the above not so sure if this will acheive anything; let me
know if you want me to try.

The applications are not really frozen. The Splash screen is displayed for
60/90 seconds (a time too long!) and then the applications start. During this
time a large amount of RAM is wasted from the OO module (more than 100 Mb).This
occurs using the default installation location [\program folder\OpenOffice\].
Unfortunatly, I have an Italian localized Windows 98 OS and the OO Installation
procedure doesn't read the default program folder path [called '\programmi\']
in a correct way. It creates a new folder with the OO installation default
name. If I manually change the destination folder to my system program folder
during the installation, the splash screen is still displayed for 1 minute, but
if I install the OO suite in any other folder or partition, each application
gives a GPF error caused by soffice.exe in Kernel32.dll.

TM-OF: Please have a look at it.

Hi Gianluca,
you're right, the startup time is much to big. In one of the next versions it
should be better.
I've tried to get the same situation as you have but I can't reproduce: if my
destination folder is 'program files' or 'programmi' -> no problem; even if I
use special characters like german Umlaute (öä or é) I'll get error message at
setup ->installation isn't working (known problem). If I move an existing installation to another folder and/or drive I get an error message. This is a
known problem and should be fixed in one of the next OO versions.

In 633 we have the quickstarter so OOo performes better. It also should detect
'programmi'.

Is ok in 633.
