When attempting to scan using: Insert>Scan>Select Source ... Nothing happens Why?

When attempting to scan using: Insert>Scan>Request ... Get Error Message "No
SANE source available at the moment".  How do I acquire the required sane
source?  My scanner software plays fine with all other software, so why not with
yours?

I have tried this on two different computers ad OS's and processors and get the
same results, with ver 2.4 for the PPC and 3.1.1 for the Intel, running OS 10.4
on the PPC and 10.6 on the Intel.
How do I solve, or has it not been implemented in these ver of OpenOffice?

PS Love the product and really want to get into it big time.   Am currently
using Canvas for all my Office needs, but it does not work on my Intel equipment
and will not int the future, so I need a replacement and I find and feel the
OpenOffice will do the trick, but I do a lot of scanning and I do need this
feature.  So, how do I get it to work?
