Description lars.nooden 2010-01-08 19:23:05 UTC
Please phase in use of Mailman list software for the user@openoffice.org list
Mailman is much more configurable and has more features than the existing
arrangement. It looks very much like a migration to mailman would be faster and
easier than retrofitting the existing list manager to meet the same capabilities.

Hundreds of mails are spent discussing administrivia on the user list. Many of
these are about responding to unsubscribed correspondents or how to unsubscribe.
There are also many search and browsing capabilities that the list archives
could have that would be useful.

Using mailman list manager would address those three problems and more.

The configuration option "Generic nonmember action" can be used to
either auto-subscribe the unsubscribed sender, reply with a warning, or
both, or something else such as perhaps flagging the message as coming
from an unsubscribed address.

Mailman can be phased in without disturbing the existing archive too much nor
would it disturb any of the other mailing lists at all, if done right.

A change of the mail list manager for our current infrastructure is not an option.
You may want to have a look at sympa and Kenai and see whether this could
improve the situation.
