Description levis501 2009-12-29 22:15:22 UTC
.xlr files are Microsoft Works spreadsheets which appear to be compatible with
OpenOffice.org with a renaming to .xls. I suggest that OpenOffice.org opens
.xlr files automatically without requiring the user to rename the file.

It´s up to the user to determine what application should be used to open what
types of files. This can be configured using the tools of the OS.

For example for MS Windows:

Select "My Computer" Tools|Folder Options... and in the window that opens, click
the File Types tab. Here you can create a new file type association.

The issue is invalid so far.

But, if OOo is able and meant to import XLR type files, this file type should be
shown in the file type control of the "Open" dialog.

Changing subject accordingly.
Changing priority from P3 to P5, according to definition ("nice-to-have")

OpenOffice does make some file associations automatically.

For instance, on my Mac, .xls files are automatically opened with OpenOffice,
but .xlr files are unassociated with any application.

This is the type of association that is the subject of this issue.

In other words, associate .xlr files with OpenOffice in the same manner that
.xls files are associated, with respect to opening a file from file browsers
and/or the command line.

Updated subject to encompass the original issue, and secondary issue of the
"File/Open" command. Perhaps there should be a separate issue opened for the
"File/Open" item.

@levis501: Maybe you want to discuss your concern about association of file
types on the UX mailinglist (discuss@ux.openoffice.org -
http://ux.openoffice.org/servlets/ProjectMailingListList). I doubt that it is
intended to associate every file type, that OOo is able to import,
automatically. There are plenty of file types other than XLR, which OOo is able
to import, but are not associated automatically.
