Original doc saved using Microsoft Excel 2000 (9.0.3821 SR-1) and the link
works! It applies to all external links.

Cell in original .doc format is

='C:\My Documents\EXCEL\Accnt708\BK708.XLS'!Balance

When opened by Open Office  version 3.1.1 it becomes

=#NAME!Balance

i.e All the file information is lost. (Error:508 is displayed on the spreadsheet)

This makes the transition to Open Office extremely difficult if you are using a
lot of external lnks and we would be extremely grateful if you could please
remedy the problem.
