Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 107643
Usually no preview when dragging a linked picture to a new location
Last modified: 2010-03-27 00:36:11 UTC
If I insert a picture (.jpg) as embedded (instead of linked), if I click on it and drag it to move it around, there is a live preview, showing the picture in the location where it would be moved to if I let go of the mouse button. If I insert it as linked, the preview does not usually work - occasionally it does work (maybe one time in 15 or 20), although when it does work it is slower/has more lag than when the image is embedded. BTW I don't think it's relevant, but I'm running Puppy Linux 4.1.1 with Xorg and OpenGL on an Nvidia Geforce 2 MX graphics card.
With "Ooo 3.1.1 WIN XP DE-multilingual version German UI activated [OOO310m19 (Build 9420)]" I - ever see a live preview (picture, not only a frame) when dragging in DRAW - never see a live preview when dragging in WRITER hoodbild: Please attach a test kit and contribute a detailed step by step instrucition. I recommend that you should read our guidelines on <http://qa.openoffice.org/issue_handling/pre_submission.html> and <http://www.openoffice.org/bugs/bug_writing_guidelines.html> before you file further issues or post again here
Ah, sorry. I tested in Draw, Impress and Calc and assumed it was the same in Writer... but it isn't. 1. Create a new Draw, Impress or Calc document. 2. Click "Insert-picture-from file" and choose a picture (actually I only tested with jpeg pictures). Do not select the "link" option. Insert the picture. You can test with this picture, although the bigger the file is the more often the problem occurs: http://www.openoffice.org/nonav/issues/showattachment.cgi/66742/guyonabike.jpg 3. Click on the picture and drag it around. While you are still dragging it there should be a preview of the picture in that location. Drag it around a number of times to see if the behaviour is consistent. 4. Delete the picture 5. Repeat steps 2 and 3 but this time select the "link" option. This time, sometimes when you drag it around the preview will not be shown, or will get stuck in one location and not continue following the mouse. Also even when the preview does work it will seem less responsive - the preview lags behind the mouse movement more than it does if the picture is inserted as an attachment. I guess this will be more noticeable the slower your computer is.
worksforme, not reproducible on linux with 3.2.0, on an athlon XP2000+ (i.e. no high-end machine, onboard graphics), be it with embedded or linked images. Note that generally, OOo has two move modes, one with the preview, and one where the object is "sucked into the mouse-cursor", i.e. where the mouse cursor changes from the move indicator (the two double-arrows in 90° angle) to a regular pointer cursor with a small rectangle in the lower right. The "sucked in" mode is used when you don't start dragging immediately, but instead hold still while pressing the mouse. In this mode, you can use <ctrl> to copy the object. Could of course be that your video driver has a repaint problem - i.e. OOo creates the preview as you drag around, but the screen is not updated by your graphics adapter. And when using a distro-version of OOo that might add some patches that change graphics output and the like - if you see a checkbox in Tools|Options → OOo → View [x] use hardware acceleration, you can try to uncheck it.
closing for now.
For the record: - I'm not using a distro version of openoffice.org and the "use hardware acceleration" option is greyed out. - I'm definitely not confusing the two move modes - the preview sometimes just doesn't appear even though it should, or it gets stuck in one place. - I originally reported that the preview only occasionally worked if I inserted the image as linked. Now the preview works more often than not. I don't know if the change is because I've upgraded to 3.2.0, but I don't think I've upgraded any system libraries or anything else that is likely to have made a difference.
