Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 106167
shouldn't use bmp bitmap files
Last modified: 2017-05-20 11:33:39 UTC
I saw that the below directories have bitmap files in bmp format. /usr/lib/openoffice/basis3.1/share/template/fr/wizard/bitmap /usr/lib/openoffice/basis3.1/share/template/en-US/wizard/bitmap I noticed that there are also gif files in the same directories. The gif file provides a better compression ratio. I think that converting bmp files in gif will save space.
This bug is tracked in the Ubuntu distribution: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/456434
@sophia What is the exact request ? stop using .bmp in the whole Office, or just in a part, here the Wizards ? Bitmap is heavily used in OpenOffice.org, because the engine is old and never rewritten. But I completely agree with you :) Another file format who could be used (and already implemented in OOo) is .png. Off topic: if you are interested, I wrote a png loader for OOo4Kids splashscreen (see http://wiki.ooo4Kids.org ).
The below directories could use a more efficient format than bmp. For the openoffice.org-common Debian package: /usr/lib/openoffice/basis3.1/share/template/en-US/wizard/bitmap/ For all the openoffice.org-l10n-[LOCALIZATION] Debian packages: /usr/lib/openoffice/basis3.1/share/template/[LOCALIZATION]/wizard/bitmap/
I assume the bmp files of the /usr/lib/openoffice/basis3.1/share/template/ directory can be converted without changing the code.
Not a locale data issue. @ka: please take over / reassign.

ka=>ih,va: could you take a look at this issue, please, and consider to use at least PNG or JPG instead of BMP files, where appropriate?
Maybe PNG is more open than JPEG.
I'm happy to provide optimized PNG files as I have done elsewhere. Regards Andrew
@ace_dent: that's nice, thank you but we also need to find someone who is able to change the according java code in the wizards to accept the .png files @sba, bc: do you know who is responsible for java wizards now?
Still occurs with 3.2 version.
@sophia: We need to find someone who rewrites the wizard code - otherwise it won't work (see my other comment)
Reset assigne to the default "issues@openoffice.apache.org".
