Description brycen 2002-12-27 02:47:58 UTC
With 1.0.0 and with 1.0.1, I can't print anything that has
an image to my PostScript printer. The same file prints fine
to an injet, or as PCL.

The inkjet is a Epson Stylus Photo.
The laser is a Brother HL1470, a relatively modern Level 2
Postscript box.

If printed as postscript I get:
   ERROR NAME: undefined
   COMMAND: filter
OPERAND STACK: --nametype-- --filetype-- 255 --nametype--
--nametype-- --marktype--

The same laser, operating in PCL mode, works fine.
But, then, of course, it can't print EPS images.

Can not reproduce under unix.
In cause of my broken linux please take over.
Comment 2 ulf.stroehler 2003-02-11 20:26:31 UTC
Are you using CUPS?
What PPD are you using in spadmin?
What have you configured as commandline in spadmin?
Does the error messages only appear when printing EPS?

us->pl: do you have any idea what the printer's error messages point to?
Comment 3 brycen 2003-02-11 21:16:40 UTC
I'm using whatever RedHat gave me:
    rpm -q -a | fgrep -i cups
    cups-libs-1.1.14-15

"Generic Printer" is selected in spadmin
"test page" in spadmin gives the error:

ERROR NAME:
  undefined
COMMAND:
  filter
OPERAND STACK;
   --nametype--
   --filetype--
   --nametype--
   --dicttype--
   --dicttype--

Other than with StarOffice, the printer works flawlessly.

Most likely the Generic Printer just doesn't cut it. Have you tried
using the correct PPD file (e.g. at
http://solutions.brother.com/hl1400/download/dl-win95-ps.html ; don't
let yourself be distracted by the .exe ending of the download there,
it's really just a zip archive).
Comment 5 brycen 2003-02-12 13:26:31 UTC
A) I would NEVER have figured that out without a hint. So, at least,
this should be a documentation bug. The printer setup help does not
mention .PPD files, the extension in the share/psprint/driver driver
directory is .PS not .PPD, and the "import" button shows no files when
pointed at a directory full of .PPD's.

B) It does not work any better. I get the same result. Even printing
to a file, then dumping to the printer gives the error. Showing the
file with "gv" works.

Note: The 'help' file here is kinda useless. For example:
   "Print to file"
Check this box if you want to print directly to a file
Comment 8 philipp.lohmann 2003-03-12 13:33:09 UTC
The problem may also be due tup CUPS; i have reports that CUPS meddles
with the feature list that is in the produced PostScript file before
sending it on to the printer. The behaviour is said to be better with
CUPS 1.8, so an upgrade might solve your problem.

Regarding your issue with the PPD import: it's not clear what box you
mean that points to a directory full of PPD files; the browse box you
mention is not supposed to show any files, you just select a directory
in it (that's why its title says "select path"). After that the
directory is searched for PPD files named *.ps or *.ppd (case
insensitive) and the files that are found and pass a content detection
are displayed in the import dialogue itself (the dialogue you started
the path dialogue from).

The documentation for spadmin you can find at

http://whiteboard.openoffice.org/unbranded-source/browse/~checkout~/whiteboard/www/doc/setup_guide/en/ooo_setup_english.pdf

which documents setup and spadmin (the latter is in the Appendix).

pl->us: please either confirm and set target or close; i cannot
reproduce the problem

Only a desperate idea: can anyone check whether there is a relation to
issue 19509 (there only EPS-printout-problem)?

I change component to gsl

If I will not see any further action as new tests with 1.1.0, votes,
attachments or confirmations in this issue, I will have to close this
issue 2003-10-31 as INVALID. Any Objections?

tested with 1.1 and could not reproduce.

@submitter:
1. pls. attach a document that leads to the reported error message
when printing.
2. what happens if you print to file with the
"Brother-HL1470_BR-Script2" printer driver (PPD)? You can look at the
resulting PS file with 'gv'. Does 'gv' report the same error?
Comment 14 Rainer Bielefeld 2003-11-02 14:44:27 UTC
The attached PS-file crashes my GV!

Closing issue due to reporter's inactivity as INVALID.

Please open a new issue if the problem still exists in the latest
release of OOo.
