Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 102351
Bullet Management
Last modified: 2017-05-20 10:55:30 UTC
Found in version 3.0.1 Bullets are difficult to manage. In Microsoft Word you can select to create a bulletted list for any paragraph and when you press enter on the end of a line, it automatically creates a bullet at the beginning of the next line. This does not happen in OpenOffice Impress. To get bullets on each line I had to trick the system by creating a bulletted list in Word and then cutting and pasting it into Impress using the Paste Special function. Even then I had to delete unknown characters at the beginning of each line and on occasion it came up with different sized bullets. The On/Off switch for the bullets only seams to manipulate the bullet on the first line.
Sorry, not reproducible. Selecting the title/text layout sets bullets to every new line. Using a normal textbox it is easy, too: type a line of text, click bullets on/off and all following lines will get bullets, too. Please give a detailed step by step description. Thanks.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. The sequence of events that created the error is as follows: 1. Created a new document using the sequence from the template wizard Once opened I played around with header position, inserted a picture, played around with footer position, changed background, image size etc. 2. Selected the second page in the presentation Changed some presentation elements, positioning, picture size etc. 3. Selected a bulletted list from a document created and opened using Word 97 4. Pressed Ctrl C 5. Selected the example text in the OpenOffice document to the end of the line 6. Pressed Ctrl V 7. Text came out garbled with squares at the beginning of the lines and bullet colour changed 8. Pressed Ctrl Z 9. Text was removed and went back to before except with a smaller font 10. Created a text document on the desktop 11. Pasted the text into the text box 12. Removed the squares from the front of the lines 13. Copied text back into the OpenOffice document and it came up with only one bullet at the beginning of the text block. In my document where I experience the problem, the text is not separated by a gap between the lines (I may have changed the formatting here to achieve this) 14. Moved cursor to the front of the second line and pressed backspace. It moved to the end of the first line so then I pressed Enter and it just moved back to the second line. No additional bullet created. I have since found no way to get bullets to work properly in this created document. I resolved the problem by manually inserting pictures where I wanted the bullets but long term this solution is not satisfactory. Starting from scratch and using the sequence as above and playing around with different options the pasted text regularly converts to the Symbols font without warning and other erratic behaviour occurs. I do not consistently end up with a bullet problem when starting from a new document but there is always some erratic behaviour. Ctrl Z also does rarely return the document to a pre-pasted state.
Please attach the document you have created where xou have problems getting the bullets to work.

Such behaviour is a result of having the “Title†style applied to problematic text boxes. MS PowerPoint behaves the same way. It seems that this is not a bug but rather a “feature†of the “Title†style. Please use simplified “Invention Development and Design - abridged v8.odp†to reproduce this issue. -------------------------------- Slide #1 (Text in a main textbox is formatted with “Title†style) has this problem. “Bullets On/Off†button adds/removes only one bullet for the first line of the text. There are several ways to reproduce this problem: 1) Put cursor onto the last line of the text, do not select any text, and click “Bullets On/Off†button. 2) Highlight the whole block of text in this text box and click “Bullets On/Off†button. 3) Highlight the third line of text in this text box and click “Bullets On/Off†button. In all these cases a bullet can be added only to the first line of the text. Adding new lines using “Enter†key doesn’t change this behaviour. Note: This slide was originally created by openii_cameron. You should be able to recreate this issue in any presentation in both OpenOffice and PowerPoint by using a Title text box (on the top of a slide). Slide #2 (Text in a main textbox is formatted with “Default†style) doesn’t have this problem. “Bullets On/Off†button adds/removes bullets as expected. I created slide #2 by copying a text box from a “Normal†PowerPoint presentation to the current one. My speculations: --------------------- 1) I noticed that the problematic text box on a slide #1 was formatted with “Title†style. 2) By copying a text from slide #1 to MS Word I noticed that it looks like slide #1 has only one paragraph and that pressing “Enter†key inside a text box of a slide #1 adds a new line but doesn’t create a new paragraph. 3) Text in a title of a normal OpenOffice presentation also can have not more than one bullet. 4) MS PowerPoint manages bullets of a text formatted with “Title†style the same way; such text can have not more than one bullet regardless of the number of "paragraphs". 5) I believe that the text boxes of the original problematic presentation were created by copying and extending a text box of a “Title†of a slide. Identical behaviour was observed on OOO310m19 (Build:9420) and OOO320m2 (Build:9432) on Windows XP SP2. I failed to find a corresponding specification document on http://specs.openoffice.org. It seems that the OpenOffice design team is willing to bend over backwards to make its products compatible with MS Office products including design bugs and idiosyncrasies.

Problem reproducible on slide 4. Selecting text in textbox and switching bullets on generates only one bullet.
