Description Unknown 2002-12-13 12:44:21 UTC
This is a behaviour I encounter several times as well on Windows 98 as on SUSE
Linux when working with documents containing several graphics on a fairly small
page layout (DIN A5, about half US letter). There are pages with several bitmap
graphics per page. All graphics are formatted so that text wraps around them.
Some have a specific contour defined in order to better control the text
wrapping behaviour. The documents range from 4 to 30 pages with approximately
one and a half graphics per page. File sizes range from 700 kB to 2900 kB.

Sometimes (mostly during scrolling) the text wrapping starts to switch wildly
between several wrapping modes (the text wraps around the graphics contour, the
text wraps around the graphics rectangle,...). Since this changes the page
breaks and the text wrap for the other graphics these graphics start as well to
blink their wrap modes. By the way this eats up enormous resources from the PC,
slowing down every other task as well (OO tasks won't respond at all!).

When I'm lucky, the text will calm down after a while (like one to five
minutes) and I can continue to work. Sometimes OO crashes with an error message.
Sometimes there is no other way then to kill the OO-process. I had one document
that crashed that way directly on saving and was absolutely unrecoverable (on
Linux as well as on Windows).

I probably ruled out some possible reasons: it is not (only) caused by two
graphics being wrapped around in the same line of text. It is independent of
graphics being embedded or linked.

It seems to be somewhat dependent on defined contours. The less specific
contours I use the more seldom does this behaviour show up. It also seems to
get worse when I use concave contours like wrapping text in the in- and outside
of a V-formed graphic.

I'm sorry but I don't have a document to share since the contents of those docs
where I encounter this behaviour are confidential with a customer of mine and -
infuriatingly - my attempt to quickly whip up some document with the same
behaviour and non-confidential content failed :-(

Oh, one more thing: occasionally I manage to get one or two clicks in between
the start of all that blinking and the total unresponsiveness of OO. It seems
that when I manage to select the wild blinking graphic the entire process is
aborted, the text wraps one more time (correctly) and work can continue.

Thanks for the trouble!

We have no problem about that in general. Please provide me a bugdoc
to reproduce, thanks.

Stephan,
does the problem still happen in OpenOffice1.1beta2 (or rc1,
which should be out shortly)? If so, I bet you could come up
with a nonconfidential document by replacing all the letters
in your document with the letter 'e', or something like that.
We really need an example to be able to fix it.
Thanks!
