Description gyll 2007-08-02 13:47:09 UTC
I am very pleased with the introduction of the various new options when
exporting to PDF (e.g. the number of open levels in the bookmarks when initially
opening the PDF in a viewer, etc), but there's one problem: these options are
not taken into account when using the "export directly to PDF" taskbar button,
in which case some other defaults are used (don't even know which ones, for
example all levels in the bookmarks menu are open instead of what i've set in my
"export as PDF" options dialog window).

So the suggestion is: I think it would be more sensible to make the "export
directly to PDF" button in the taskbar to automatically use the options that
i've set when configuring the "export as PDF" options dialog instead of some
mysterious defaults.

I spent quite some time before writing this down, tried to weight the pros and
cons, and in the end i decided to add the following to my "export directly to
PDF" suggestion:

I think the behavior of the "export directly to PDF" button should be equivalent
to the behavior of the "save" button, except only for the file type. For me it
would make much more sense (and save me some clicks) to have the file
immediately saved as PDF under the "current" file name and in the same directory
as the document that is being edited instead of being promoted for a file name,
and also i think there should be no prompt for "file already exists", just
overrite the PDF file the same way the "save" button overrites the existing
file. The "export as PDF" menu item is there and does the trick if one wants to
save the PDF version under a different name etc, but for a quick PDF save i
think that pressing the "export directly to PDF" butotn should be enough to
immediately save the file w/o any other prompts.

I realize that this is a subjective issue, but i think the consistent way is to
have this sort of corespondence between the "save" and "export directly to PDF"
buttons on one hand, and the "save as" and "export as PDF" buttons on the other.
