When I open a document in OOo of labels that I did in another compatible
application (like Word 97), I can't see the faint grid for the labels, nor is
there an option to switch the grid on and off, so that I could at least see if
it's off for some reason and turn it on.

Please Attach the documents which make this problem, so we can test
it/faster to confirm.  
(Without the documents, we cannot confirm the problem easily/need more
time)
Don't forget to cut other part of the documents, so the file size is
small, but we still able to see the problem.

I cannot confirm this, as I see same grid in Office XP on win xp and
OOo 1.1

The grid is showing up for me now for some reason, so you can mark
this bug as invalid. Sorry.
