with this excel file OpenOffice has the problem
Hi, what's about using the link Find an Issue and selecting spreadsheet as component and password as as entry for the summary field ? This will lead you to Issue 402 and some others. Also the Prio is to high. Prio 4 maybe 3 are Ok. Closed double. Frank *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 402 *** closed double Hi I understand that you close this case because the MS algorythm is a secret, I was searching and found that they use RC4 algorythm. I found some web pages with implementations of RC4 for example: http://www.sevillaonline.com/ActiveX/vb5/RC4Lib.htm http://www.planet-source-code.com/vb/scripts/ShowCode.asp? txtCodeId=1736&lngWId=1 http://www.planet-source-code.com/vb/scripts/ShowCode.asp? lngWId=4&txtCodeId=7467 But because RC4 is a patent of RSA the issue must be if you can use it for free or not. About this a found some article and it says The RSA public key algorithm is covered by U.S. Patent 4,405,829 "Cryptographic Communication System and Method". Within the U.S., users of the RSA public key algorithm provided by the external Crypto++ library must obtain a license from RSA granting them permission to use the RSA algorithm.) I have been told by reliable sources that Patent 4,405,829 expires on 20 September 2000. Then maybe is posible solve this problem with the password protect documents. Enrique Hi Falko, can you investigate this case please ? Frank This issue and 402 I think it is not same, because it say is Excel document without password. Regarding the RSA I have been told by reliable sources that Patent 4,405,829 expires on 20 September 2000. We need correct info about this, please provide the source and proof about this. so we can do this if it is true. and please check if it is same case with MS Word file or not ? Thanks reassigned to Frank The Internet was buzzing with comments as we approached the end of the patent on the RSA algorithm. It should be easy to run down with a simple Google search. FL->MHU: I think you already have a task for this issue. Please confirm & close this one. Thank you! Hi 'entorresa', all, Yes, this issue is indeed duplicate to issue 402 (where the description starts with '...Even if I possess the password for an Excel file...'). Thus, I will mark this one as duplicate, again. With respect to the 'RSA' patent mentioned earlier, it is indeed expired but has also nothing to do with this case. That 'famous' patent covers 'public key cryptography' and the associated 'RSA' (named after it's creators: Rivest, Shamir, and Adleman) algorithm. We are here talking about 'RC4' ('Rivest Cipher number 4') which is a 'stream cipher' and thus a quite different thing. As to the legal status of RC4, the only things I could find so far, is that it has a quite interesting history, and that 'RC4(TM)' is a Trademark of 'RSA Data Securities, Inc.'. It is not yet clear to me what this means in practice. Matthias *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 402 *** Closing as duplicate to issue 402... |
