Followup to issue 12697. There are some fonts that either do not have the symbols required to 
print the non-printing-char indicators or where the non-printing-char indicators have a width 
different from their corresponding non-printing characters. E.g. the MidDot and the Space have a 
different width. 
 
The first case is much more common. Check in the Insert->Special_Character dialogue whether a 
font has the non-printing-char indicators. If there are none the fallback fonts indicators are used 
which are usually not matched to the original fonts non-printing chars.

SBA: According to the OpenOffice.org roadmap 
(see http://tools.openoffice.org/releases) this issue was retargeted to 
"OOo Later".
