MRU->TL: Do you think, it might be possible for a future version, to offer an option to switch between English and localized input of the symbol names? It can be done to skip the localization of the symbols names and use only the programmatic name which (currently) happen to be the same as the english ones. But I think in a french office one would like to use the french names for the symbols. Otherwise maybe it would be better to use an english office installation. And after all the symbols can be user defined. If you don't like to use OMÉGA than just use the respective dialog and assign a new name to it or (even better) define a new symbol with the name of your liking to point to the same character. TL->BH: To you for decision. I disagree with TL about his comment: "But I think in a french office one would like to use the french names for the symbols. Otherwise maybe it would be better to use an english office installation." There is a BIG difference between having menus and button labels written in french and writing greek letters in the formula editor in "french" or "english". A french user (as the reporter and myself) prefers having the french version of OOo but also prefers writing greek letters without accents for the reason the reporter gives. Moreover, I use OOo with a english keyboard which has no accentuated letters. This is a real problem! Another bigger problem appears when sharing OOo documents between different users having different language versions of OOo as e.g. the english version requires no accents whereas the french version (and certainly some others) requires accents and will not recognize non accentuated letters. This problem is clearly apparent when editing equations written with a different language version (personal experience!). I estimate this problem to be critical enough for all non-english users to be solved before the release of OOo 2.0 and should be set to NEW. What about this bug report? May you have a look there: http://www.dmaths.org (eg om + [F3] => %oméga in OOo-fr...) Regards <fr> L'add-on Dmaths /auteur français ;-) / est disponible à http://www.dmaths.org (ex d'autotexte: om + [F3] => %oméga) En espérant pouvoir aider... </fr> You can already customize the catalogue to include accents if you want to... So as far as I understand, this is already supported. . Universities are by default multi-language environments. In that situation it is quite common to have several people working on the same project from systems that are setted with different languages. In that situation, using different "translations" to name the _same_ symbols is not acceptable. And the proposed solution "don't like it? Change it yourself" is not serious. This problem is not only with French: Spanish Greek characters are also "translated". In fact, some translations are wrong: "epsilón" is not a Spanish word... I cannot understand why this "translation" is performed, specially with all the other commands still in English (please, DON'T change them...). On Calc there is now an option (hidden, I hope it will be more visible in the future) to use the English functions: I think an option to use the English names for Greek characters on Math expressions will be useful also, specially for those coming from LaTeX. |
