A "merge cells" icon is missing, preventing this function to be added to the object bar. 
Indeed, it's written "Merge Cells" which takes a lot of space in the object bar. I will try to 
make a nice icon for it and then submit it to you...

  Furthermore, this button should be a toggle-button. As one already 
merged cell is selected, pushing this button should remove merge. The 
way it is now, it's comfortable to merge cells, but way too 
uncomfortable, to undo it.

Merging cells is not so often used, due to that this function is not
supported as button. Of course you can configure it via Tools /
Configure / Customize.
