pdfFactory is shareware, available at http://www.fineprint.com/.  It installs 
itself as a printer.  You print to it, it allows you to write out PDFs.  It has 
interesting options for the writing of PDFs.

Trying to print to it from Writer causes some "exceptional error" popup window 
from Writer, and then I click 'OK' but the app hangs.

Please try OOo 1.0.3.1. Should be fixed there.
